Can I do anything about mold?

Being in an industry where we clean up many various situations involving mold there are a few things to keep in mind if you are a renter. Unfortunately most renters need to get in touch with the owner of the unit if they find they have a leak or there is any inication of mold. The owner is the only person who can immediately give access to move forward. If the owner gives a landlord or tenant verbal consent remediation services may temporarily move forward.

What could mold mean for a tenant?

Mold can cause health issues. These issues can vary from flaring up allergies to harmful health issues. Mold is not something to ignore. If you think there is anything going on you should first contact the homeowner, and then contact an air quality assessor to test the air. The test they are able to perform can tell you have mold in the residence and even what kind and how much.

What can I do if my landlord refuses to do anything?

Each state is different on the legal limitations required by the owner of the unit. You may have a long list of things you are able to done or you may not have many rights in this regards. You need to do research and know what your rights are.

If you are able to get the owner on board process with testing and remediation process. This process can take any amount of time depending on the extent of what is affected and how long it will take to rebuild the areas affected.

Know what you can and cannot authorize and be sure to ask your landlord before you move in for what to do in emergencies such as this.
