Power outages and Mold?

When a storm that is severe enough happens normally a power outage comes along with it. Power outages can cause a string on unfortunate events. Many families first thoughts automatically go to the refrigerator and all the perishable foods within it. These foods are important to think about because they can cause an odor and lots of money lost in perishable goods. These foods can also cause mold within the refrigerator. There maybe mold lurking in other areas in your home that need attention as well.
When the power goes out that means that the air conditioner goes out as well. As the temperatures rise in the home the humidity levels that can cause growth also to rise. The air conditioner in a home keeps the humidity levels low enough to discourage growth. When the power goes out and the longer it stays out, the longer the air conditioner is off it will cause the humidity levels to climb until they reach the same levels as the outdoor humidity.
It is easier in the home to keep the humidity down rather than lower it from a high level to a lower level. One way to keep the moisture from settling in one place in the home and keep the levels down would be to keep any ceiling fans, or fans in general on to allow the movement of air. Another way to help keep the levels down would be to close all blinds or shades to keep the heat level lower. If all the windows are open it allows the heat level to rise along with the humidity.
