Smoke and Soot Residues - Our restoration process at SERVPRO involves the removal of fire, heat, and smoke residues from different surfaces and materials. But, not all residues are the same, sometimes they are easily removed, while others can be quite stubborn.

Combustion - This happens when a solid burning material such as wood, turns into gas through heat. When combustion occurs, the material that is burning breaks down and combines with oxygen.
Which leads our professionals at SERVPRO to explain that for combustion to happen, three components must be present, fuel, oxygen, and heat. But, when they aren't in perfect balance, they result in producing smoke and soot residue.

Smoke - When the materials that are burning combust, they release solid particles, gas, and aerosols that float in the air, and are what we perceive as "Smoke." Depending on the type of compounds burnt, different invisible gasses make up a component of smoke. Burning organic materials produces oxides of nitrogen while burning inorganic materials result in the release of sulfur dioxides. Some of these invisible gasses that result from combustion during a fire are extremely dangerous to humans. Breathing any form of smoke can cause difficulties, but exposure to carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide can result in fatal accidents if consumed in large enough doses.

Invisible vapors aren't the only dangerous properties found in smoke. Small odor-absorbing particles of carbon and aerosols also become suspended in the air and provide us with the ability to both see and smell "smoke." When the smoke finally settles on surfaces, it then becomes soot (depending on the burnt material) or ash. Ash can be extremely acidic and pit metal possessions and ruin electronics.

All of our Technicians at SERVPRO are required to wear personal protective equipment to ensure their safety while on the job. Much like a Firefighter wears while fighting the fire, our Technicians protect themselves from the possibility of airborne particles while performing the restoration.

Our SERVPRO Technicians take great lengths to protect their fellow workers as well as any visitors to any jobs where we are performing a restoration. Don't the chance of being exposed to any of these harmful particles by entering your property without the proper protection.
